AI Journaling Privacy: What Gets Shared and Stored
You can write an entry for yourself and ask an AI a question later without intending those two things to become one conversation. A useful privacy explanation tells you whether the app treats them separately.
This article concerns hosted AI, where a provider processes requests on its infrastructure. An on-device model can have a different data path. For either design, ask what happens to your text rather than relying on the word “AI” or “encrypted.”
Four questions before sharing
- What is included? Your latest message, earlier conversation, saved summaries, selected entries, or the whole archive? Look for an actual description of the request.
- Who processes it? The journal company may pass text through its own infrastructure and then to a model provider. Ask about both.
- How long is it retained? Request handling, logs, caches, and saved history are different copies with potentially different lifetimes.
- Can it be used for training? Check the terms for the particular product you are using. A consumer chat account and a commercial API are not interchangeable.
You can also share less. For example, “Help me prepare for a conversation about workload” may be enough to begin. You can leave out names and identifying details that don't change the question. That reduces what you disclose; it does not make a hosted request anonymous.
The two memory controls in KindMind
Open Account → AI features. Journal memory controls whether journal entries contribute to AI memory. It is off by default. Your Guide can still remember your conversations with it; turning Journal memory off is not an off switch for chat memory.
Turning Journal memory off stops new summaries from journal entries. Previously created memories remain until you edit or delete them. Use View memories to inspect them, or Clear all AI memories to remove the saved memory collection. Clearing it does not delete your journal entries or chat history, and future conversations can create new memories.
If you want an entry excluded, make that choice before it is processed. Changing a setting later cannot undo a request that has already been sent to a provider.
What happens on a KindMind request
Stored journal content is encrypted on your device before it reaches our database. For an AI request, your device sends the relevant readable content through KindMind's proxy to Anthropic. Our proxy does not store message bodies or log them. Certain chat requests also receive an automated safety check; KindMind may retain category-level safety records without the conversation text.
Anthropic's commercial API retention policy describes deletion within 30 days, with exceptions including usage-policy enforcement and legal obligations. That is not a promise of zero retention. Our AI privacy page describes the arrangement used by KindMind and the request path in more detail.
Before enabling journal access, read that explanation and inspect the memory controls. You should be able to say what you are sharing, rather than having to assume that a storage-encryption claim covers every feature.
